Blessings of the equinox to you! And a little rage…

The equinox at StonehengeIt’s the day of equal dark and light…

…the tipping point as the sunlight increases towards summer (here in the northern hemisphere). Today there is 12 hours and 11 minutes of daylight. Here in California the sunrise was at 7:11 a.m. and the sunset is at 7:22 p.m. Balance.

A powerful day to set powerful intentions.

An equinox prayer

American Goddess by Paul StahlMay this day herald balance for all. May it bring in spacious and abundant love, peace and harmony. In our families, in our communities, in our world. May there be sacred work taken on, and much merriment and dancing! And may every woman be honored and respected and empowered to take her own path and make her own decisions. Today and every day. And may every woman stand for her sisters’ rights—out loud.

Yes, a little of my rage at the erosion of women’s rights in this country seeped into that prayer. Good! Women’s rage makes for powerful magic. Every day brings more appalling news about states encroaching so far into women’s decisions that they now legislate vaginal probes before a woman can decide to terminate a pregnancy. Unwanted penetration? Isn’t that rape, yo?

Love Letter magic

Tonight’s the night I will take all the Love Letters that have been mailed to me and put them in a sacred box on an altar in my house, blessed and charged to grow in power and intention over the rest of this year. These letters were written by the women who took the Love Letter class with me. Each is addressed to the writer, written by the goddess, god—whatever entity embodies spirit for the individual. The letter is dated December 31, 2012, and lovingly congratulates the writer for all the powerful audacious juicy manifestations that have come to be in 2012.

I will mail each one of these letters back to the writer at the winter solstice. Receiving one of these letters is crazy powerful, by the time the end of the year rolls around it’s likely to be a very unexpected surprise to receive in the mail. Thank you. sisters, for taking the time to do something so beautiful for yourselves.

Still I Rise by Maya Angelou

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

I’m a barely tamed hippie, sage, seasoned, sarcastic (not all the time any more, but still). I’m a mom, a daughter, sister, a neighbor, and a friend. I’ve been on this meandering journey — like you, probably — seeking a better connection to and experience of peace, harmony, and fun in every bit of life. I’m single, quite good at it, and mostly love it. I’m here for the conversations I get to have with you, which these days center on exploring the mystery and beauty of life, work, health, aging, and creative expression.
